What is Someone Else's Dog Worth to You?

Stories of Caring from Bridges Home Care

March 1, 2010

In Maine, rain in January is almost always a bad thing.  Most Mainers would tell you that they’d rather drive in snow than rain in the winter.  Rain means ice – and even with 4-wheel drive – 4 wheels are no good if you hit ice.

We have a client whose wife has been receiving our services for a number of years and is at a point in her life where she’s not really able to communicate or is even always aware of what’s going on around her.  She is confined to a hospital bed and her husband is committed to keep her home as long as he is breathing.  Needless to say, she cannot be left home alone.

Now the clients also have a dog – a small lap dog who is as well cared for as her owner.  The dog will sit on our client’s lap during visits from anyone the dog doesn’t know.  In return, even when it appears that our client is not aware of what is happening, her hand will come up to rest on the dog.

The staff that goes into this home is fabulous – reliable, committed, caring and dedicated to helping him keep her home.  This morning, one of their staff people drove, regardless of ice on the roads, school cancellations & delays, to the home to be there an hour earlier than normal (arriving as the sun did).

Why?  The couple’s dog had an important vet appointment.

Now it may seem like an unnecessary risk – would it be worth it to you?  Our employee knows how important this appointment was to the client, and therefore it was worth it to her.
