Grant Received from MOWAA/Wal-Mart (03/11/09) Storm Pack Meals now being distributed to homebound elders A recent $7,000 grant received from MOWAA and Wal-Mart, working together to offset the nation’s undernourished homebound in the downturn economy, has allowed Spectrum Generations to purchase and distribute over 2700 extra shelf-stable meals to Central Maine homebound seniors. With the economy affecting Meals on Wheels programs across the U.S., Wal-Mart worked with Meals On Wheels of America to create a grant and distribute $750,000 in 60 different grants to agencies across the country. One of only two agencies in Maine to receive the grant, Spectrum Generations received $7000 for the Storm Pack meals. Each individual Storm Pack contains shelf stable food, has 2 meals included and requires no heating or electricity for preparation. The Packs are intended for use in emergency situations and for storm days when the Meals On Wheels drivers cannot make home meal deliveries. With the number of storms with past winter, the homebound are in need of these emergency rations, which offer not only nourishment, but also peace of mind. Packs will be distributed over the course of the next 2-3 weeks to all Spectrum Generations Meals On Wheels clients. |
