A Caregiver's Story
Cal-A Caregiver
|
|
Cal and his wife Jean have been married for over 45 years. In August of 2001 Jean was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer, myelofibrosis. With Jean’s diagnosis both felt the impact of a terminal illness and “their whole world changed.” For Jean, she has her “good and bad days.” For Cal it has been difficult as others do not always see the extent of Jean’s illness on him as her caregiver. However, together and individually they are both finding ways to cope.
Jean has turned to support online so that she is able to connect with others in the United States and outside of the country who have a similar diagnosis. Cal, through a grant with the Family Caregiver Support Program, has turned to exercise. For the last few years he has become a friendly face at the YMCA in Manchester and Augusta. The YMCA has given Cal an outlet that he turns too just for himself three times per week. He credits the exercise routine to improved physical and emotional health. He has found “the more active you are in your self-care, the better you are able to take care of the person you are caring for.” Cal has made a lifestyle change that he hopes to be able to continue.
Together they both participate in a local cancer support group through Maine General. The group has helped them to talk with others facing a cancer diagnosis and their family members, as well as gain social support for themselves. They hope they are able to reach others who might benefit from this group. If you or some one you know might benefit from the Cancer Support Group please see the contact information below.
