November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

November is Alzheimer’s disease awareness month and a chance for all of us to recognize that Alzheimer’s affects not only the individual, but the families and caregivers involved.

For every person with Alzheimer's there is often at least one other person who directly cares for them, and a host of healthcare & social workers, advocates, volunteers and support workers in the background.

In the U.S., an estimated 5.4 million people have Alzheimer’s disease. Someone develops the disease every 69 seconds and by 2050, as many as 16 million people could develop Alzheimer’s disease. As many as 14.9 million families are providing care to a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s disease.

It is not known what causes Alzheimer's disease, and at present there is no cure, but there are many options out there that can help caregivers and families with the day-to-day challenges of dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.

An adult day care program is a great option to explore. Spectrum Generations Adult DayBreak program is an affordable licensed alternative to more expensive assisted living levels of care.  It is a place where the person with Alzheimer’s can be with others in a safe environment and provides a much-needed respite for the caregiver, affording a break from the physical demands and stress of providing round-the-clock care.

For a loved one suffering with Alzheimer’s, an Adult DayBreak program can offer many benefits. The program offers improvement in mental and physical health, enhanced or maintained level of independence, and socialization and support with peers.  Staff led planned activities, such as music, exercise, and art programs, are done daily. Nutritious meals are provided for breakfast, lunch, and snack.   It offers a win/win situation for everyone in the family—not only the consumer who attends the program, but also for the family member who has primary responsibility as a caregiver.

Please come by and visit one of Spectrum Generations wonderful Adult DayBreak Centers in Belfast, Waterville, Skowhegan, or Hallowell. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to give you a tour of our facilities.
