The Cohen Deck Project is a true community-inspired effort that combines social dining with the health benefits of being outside. The structure, on the community center’s east facing side, will overlook bucolic rolling fields, where people will enjoy breathtaking sunrises or experience the warmth of the mid-day sun while socializing during lunch. Completion of the deck is anticipated for mid-September.
The $400,000 expected cost is being funded by individual donations, corporate gifts and private foundations. Thank you so much to an anonymous donor for their substantial high-level personal donation, to Central Maine Power Company for their most generous corporate gift, to the Elsie and William Viles Foundation for making a big impact and to so many others that have generously contributed thus far. This effort would not be possible without all of YOU!
Construction will include shade canopies, landscaping, a handicap accessible ramp and comfortable, durable furniture for our guests to enjoy. You can help us “Deck-It-Out” by sponsoring a piece of furniture to include your name, your business name, or a dedication.
The completed project will add space for about 100 additional diners, increasing services offered at the center. Existing programs such as Adult Day, or special interest groups like the Cohen Knitting Club, will also be able to expand their programs to utilize the new space, engaging their participants while enjoying the health benefits of spending time outside. The Deck Project has the potential to drive capacity and increase awareness of Spectrum Generations as a community hub and secure sustainable program funding. Research shows outside time improves concentration and creativity, especially among older adults. According to a 2017 report from Elder Care Alliance, the act of being outside does more than just lift your spirits -- it also provides a boost for physical and mental wellbeing. One study found a 20-percent improvement in attention span and memory after spending just one hour in a natural environment.
